26 March 2017: Group A - Beginners Bonsai Course - Botany for the Bonsai Artist Sold Out

Looking after a bonsai is looking after a tree? In this session we shall cover some of the basics of plant development. Understanding the role of light, heat, water, nutrition and how each of these elements are best used and balanced to enhance the development of your bonsai. Emphasis is placed on identifying and planning for the seasonal requirements and development of your bonsai. Common bonsai species requirements will be identified, but we will try and cater your specific bonsai species too.

The afternoon session will be a get your hands dirty session, with creating a bonsai from garden material. The session will help you identify, traits to look for and amplify in ordinary garden stock, and how to give the good beginings to a great bonsai.

02 April 2017: Advanced Bonsai Workshop - Propagating bonsai and growing your bonsai collection

As your confidence grows in bonsai, you will find yourself wanting to grow your bonsai collection. We will look at the various techniques available to propagate bonsai. The course will introduce you to growing bonsai from seed, cuttings, air-layering and grafting. The session are heavily practical in nature and you will be expected to have complete a few air-layers and grafts. So if you have any plant material that you would like to propagate you are most welcome to bring it along if you can. Plant material will be provide in the class to help you practice and learn the various techniques.

09 April 2017: Bonsai Masterclass - Conifer repotting, daily care to ensure healthy growth for the year

The Bonsai Masterclass focus on seasonal work that needs to be carried out on your Bonsai, this workshop shows how to re-pot and root prune conifers and evergreen bonsai trees, for many conifer species this is best carried out after late spring.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their bonsai with them so that they can works on them under the guidance of Master Nobuyuki Kajiwara. Masterclass attendees, many who have been attending, for years have noticed that their bonsai trees have been improving year on year.

16 April 2017: Advanced Bonsai Workshop - Watering and fertilising bonsai
"Watering a bonsai is 50% of bonsai" Nobuyuki Kajiwara

While we intuitively recognise, that we have to water our bonsai? Unfortunately, very few of us ever get to appreciate how important it is to the development and vitality of our bonsai. Most unseasoned enthusiast bounce from one extreme to the other. We show you how to recognise when your bonsai needs watering, and when it does not. You will be shown how to recognise signs of over or under watering. During this session we explore, water and its role in feeding plants. We will explore macro and micro nutrients and how they affect plant growth and when and how to administer them. We will work on building a feeding and watering program for bonsai. You will learn how to make your very own healthy organic fertilisers from easily available raw materials.

21 May 2017: Specialist Seminar - Native Broadleafs for Bonsai
Growing Native and Naturalised Species as bonsai is becoming very popular in the UK and indeed a lot of Europe too. The demand for them far outstrips their supply which means that even the most modest of Native bonsai command a significantly higher price than imported bonsai of comparable maturity. We will look at strategies and systems for growing native species for bonsai and which species lend themselves naturally to bonsai. We will look at the common species as beech, hornbeam, Silver Birch, English Elm, Oaks and explore more exotic European species such as Willows, Alders, Conkers and lots more. Bonsai Over Rock bonsai style is a popular style on display at many of the national bonsai shows and one everyone want to have in their collection. We shall spend the day exploring this advance Bonsai Style and how we can go about creating it. We will explore various type of Rocks how they can be used, how to select a suitable tree for root on rock compositions and finally we will end up make and designing a root on rock bonsai. As with other Advance Workshops you can bring your own materials to make a Root-Over-Rock bonsai or we can provide you with the materials to make the composition. The Kits are available for £ 45, which includes a suitable rock, a miniature bonsai, and growing mediums and all materials to complete the project.

Wiring Bonsai is a much misunderstood and feared subject primarily because wiring can have a significant impact on the overall aesthetic of the bonsai, but more importantly if it is not done properly it can seriously damage your bonsai, causing lots of scaring and more importantly slow dieback. 03 December 2017: Advanced Bonsai Workshop - Bonsai Display

Traditionally in Japan, the goal of bonsai development was for it to be displayed it in a Tokonoma for the enjoyment of visiting guest. In the Western World, we have adopted that style of Bonsai display for Exhibition Display. This session we will study how to display bonsai in the traditional setting, ie, for Bonsai Exhibitions, and how we can display and present our bonsai for our everyday enjoyment in our gardens and homes. We will study examples of bonsai gardens and how we can design them into our settings.

Other Information

Beginners, Advance and Open Sessions are £30 each. Sessions are limited to 8 attendies. Participants are encouraged to book their places well in advance, there is a £10 advance for each session booked. Students then pay the balance of £20 when attending indiviual sessions.

Master Classes are £70 per session. Please book your sessions well in advance. We offer Past year Masterclass students an, Advantage Pack to avail of Block Booking Discounts. The sessions are from 10am to 4pm, please bring a packed lunch. Teas and coffees and will be avalable.
