A bonsai pot has both an artistic and horticultural role to play in the presentation of your Bonsai. With the variety, colours, shapes, sizes available, it can be a daunting task choosing one that is just right for you bonsai. You will learn about the role and importance of Pot size and its horticultural importance and how to balance it with the bonsai's aesthetic value. You will study how pot colour can enhance the mood and presentation of your bonsai, and how pot shape, feet, decorations and reliefs can all play a significant role in the enhancement of you bonsai's beauty and in deed its very value. If you want bring a couple of Bonsai along you can use what you have learnt to help you choose a pot that is not just horticulturally right for your bonsai but one that highlights the beauty of your bonsai to it most advantageous. Growing Native and Naturalised Species as bonsai is becoming very popular in the UK and indeed a lot of Europe too. The demand for them far outstrips their supply which means that even the most modest of Native bonsai command a significantly higher price than imported bonsai of comparable maturity. We will look at strategies and systems for growing native species for bonsai and which species lend themselves naturally to bonsai. We will look at the common species as beech, hornbeam, Silver Birch, English Elm, Oaks and explore more exotic European species such as Willows, Alders, Conkers and lots more. The morning session we shall cover some of the theory of: What is a bonsai? Bonsai history? Basic Bonsai styles? The basics of bonsai care will be covered.

The afternoon session will be a get your hands dirty session, will cover with root pruning and re-potting. The session will help you identify, what traits to look for in a good bonsai, and how to choose one in a nursery setting. Students are taught how to identify when a bonsai need to re-potted and when to re-pot them. The basics of root pruning are covered and attendees are encouraged to re-pot their bonsai if it does require it.

The Bonsai Masterclass focus on seasonal work that needs to be carried out on your Bonsai, this workshop shows how to re-pot and root prune conifers and evergreen bonsai trees, for many conifer species this is best carried out after late spring.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their bonsai with them so that they can works on them under the guidance of Master Nobuyuki Kajiwara. Masterclass attendees, many who have been attending, for years have noticed that their bonsai trees have been improving year on year.

"Watering a bonsai is 50% of bonsai" Nobuyuki Kajiwara

While we intuitively recognise, that we have to water our bonsai? Unfortunately, very few of us ever get to appreciate how important it is to the development and vitality of our bonsai. Most unseasoned enthusiast bounce from one extreme to the other. We show you how to recognise when your bonsai needs watering, and when it does not. You will be shown how to recognise signs of over or under watering. During this session we explore, water and its role in feeding plants. We will explore macro and micro nutrients and how they affect plant growth and when and how to administer them. We will work on building a feeding and watering program for bonsai. You will learn how to make your very own healthy organic fertilisers from easily available raw materials.

Traditionally in Japan, the goal of bonsai development was for it to be displayed it in a Tokonoma for the enjoyment of visiting guest. In the Western World, we have adopted that style of Bonsai display for Exhibition Display. Photographing bonsai whether it is to keep a record of our bonsai collections growth and progression or whether it is to enter it into the BCI Bonsai Completion, can be a challang task. We will show you how to take beautiful bonsai photographs by exploring some of basics of photography, and some simple lighting techniques for our bonsai to show them off at their best. We shall look at ways of getting the best photo graphs of your bonsai through the Four Seasons.

Other Information

Beginners, Advance and Open Sessions are £30 each. Sessions are limited to 8 attendies. Participants are encouraged to book their places well in advance, there is a £10 advance for each session booked. Students then pay the balance of £20 when attending indiviual sessions.

Master Classes are £70 per session. Please book your sessions well in advance. We offer Past year Masterclass students an, Advantage Pack to avail of Block Booking Discounts. The sessions are from 10am to 4pm, please bring a packed lunch. Teas and coffees and will be avalable.
